Idaho: Squaw Butte Near Emmett

Squaw Butte is an easy half-day trip from Boise. It’s perfect for beginners, and provides an impressive view from the summit (if no inversion).

The road is paved until a few miles north of Emmett (B). The rest of the trip is dirt/gravel with some sections of thick gravel.

Get to Emmett Idaho, take Washington Ave North. It turns into Van Deusen Rd. just North of Black Canyon Hwy (B). Continue North and turn East on Butte Rd. (C), then North on unnamed dirt road (D).

It’s six miles from (D) to saddle near the summit. The actual summit is gated at times, but the views are still impressive from the saddle below.

  • Access: Easy

  1. Hi, nice to see this area again. I have some relatives who reside in the Sweet/Montour valley….

I have wondered how to access this area over the years, while looking up towards the top of this magnificent butte.

    thanks for the view!
